The Victorian Aboriginal Health Service (VAHS) employs over 300 staff across four service sites, including Aboriginal Health Workers, counsellors and specialist clinicians, GPs, allied health professionals, and specialist staff across a range of social and community service programs.

This study aimed to explore the historical and contemporary contexts of gambling within the Aboriginal Community in areas served by VAHS Financial Wellbeing services. It also aimed to document the VAHS service model and identify effective ways to help Aboriginal Community members address gambling harm.

The study included 3 components:

  • a description of the development of the VAHS gambling harm service model
  • a survey of 96 Aboriginal people in Victoria measuring gambling patterns and harms
  • interviews with 12 Aboriginal Community members who had been affected by gambling and 10 VAHS staff to gain insights into gambling and what could be done to minimise harms.
