Reference into coronial responses to reportable deaths of older Victorians.

This report presents the findings of the Council’s review, having considered and provided advice regarding how Victoria’s coronial system can best respond to the deaths of older Victorians.

The report acknowledges that while all deaths are important, the coronial system needs to strike a balance between maximising community health, safety and welfare by preventing avoidable deaths, and minimising intrusion into the lives of bereaved families and maintaining the rights of older Victorians.

The Council’s work on this reference builds on its April 2020 own-motion Review of reportable deaths in Victoria: final report. This report recommended a range of measures, including establishing an Aged Persons Death Register at the Court.
