Why does the Sheriff seize vehicles/assets?
Sheriff's officers enforce warrants from both the criminal and civil jurisdiction.
Some warrants direct a Sheriff's officer to seize and sell property belonging to the person named in the warrant if the outstanding fine or court ordered debt is not paid.
Auctions
Property seized by Sheriff's officers, such as vehicles, are sold at public auctions at venues across Victoria and online. The proceeds of the sale of seized goods are used to pay off the debt incurred (the original amount plus enforcement related costs) by the owner.
Potential buyers of property sold at Sheriff's auctions should note that items can be withdrawn at any time if payment of the outstanding fine or debt is made.
